Below are my favorite books on a range of topics from diet, health, diabetes, exercise, etc. Check out my book reviews, books I've read and reading list for what's coming up next.
The Diabetes Solution
Dr. Richard Bernstein
The author has had Type 1 diabetes for over 60 years and is complication free. He covers how he has successfully treated his own diabetes and thousands of others (type 1 and 2) by focusing on achieving the same blood sugar control as non-diabetics.
Why We Get Fat
Gary Taubes
Easy to understand science based explanation of "Why we get fat: and what to do about it". The "cliff's notes" version of Good Calories Bad Calories.
Good Calories Bad Calories
Gary Taubes
A hard look at the research studies to-date concerning fat metabolism. It debunks the incorrect conclusions and dogma spread by many mainstream medical organizations (and probably your family physician). While this is a bit of a technical read, if you are really interested in the science of how your body works and how our society has been given poor 1 size fits all diet advice, it's invaluable.
The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living
Stephen D. Phinney and Jeff S. Volek
This book is targeted towards members of the medical community and "low carb nerds". They cover how to formulate a sustainable, safe low carbohydrate diet based on their clinical experience and you body chemistry.
The Paleo Solution
Robb Wolf
A definitive book on the Paleo diet. He describes how he decided to go paleo, the effect of food on your digestion/health and of course, how to follow a paleo diet. Includes diet adjustments for various health issues such as allergies, diabetes and celiac.
